Information on compact fluorescent, known as energy saving lamps

As the name suggests, compact fluorescent are small versions of traditional fluorescent tubes. They are also known as energy saving bulbs, as they are available with the same caps as tungsten and halogen light bulbs.

Type of light – traditionally, fluorescent bulbs produce a cool and bright light that is harsh and can be flickery, although warmer versions are now available, which are much closer to tungsten and halogen.
Voltage – 240V
Lifespan – 6,000 to 15,000 hours plus
Colour temperature – traditionally 5,000 degrees Kelvin, although also available at lower colour temperatures of 2,000/3,000 degrees Kelvin

Advantages
• A very efficient light, with low energy consumption. A 9W compact fluorescent produces the same light output as a 40W tungsten.
• Cost effective, their operating cost is one tenth of tungsten and halogen bulbs.
• Low operating temperature
• Long-life, can last up to 6,000 hours or more.
• Available with the same caps as tungsten and mains halogen so can be used in standard light fittings.
• Available in a range of shapes, sizes, fittings and wattage

Disadvantages
• not dimmable
• light can be harsher than a normal tungsten
• slight delay between switching on and the light coming on
• must be disposed of carefully, as they contain toxic chemicals
